This portrait by John Koch depicts famed American actress and television talk show host Faye Margaret Emerson (1917-1983). Emerson began appearing in films in 1941 after signing with Warner Bros. Studios and a year later had her first starring role in the film Lady Gangster. It was during her years in film that she famously met and married her second husband Colonel Elliott Roosevelt (1910-1990), son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945). Following her emotionally traumatic divorce from Elliott Roosevelt, she transitioned to television and served as the host of several short-lived talk shows and variety shows, including Paris Cavalcade of Fashions in 1948 and The Faye Emerson Show on CBS in 1950. Emerson appeared as a frequent guest on so many talk shows and game shows, often wearing elaborate evening gowns, that she was dubbed 'The First Lady of Television.'
