In 1922, Robert Henri made his second trip to paint a commissioned portrait of Mary Cecil, the wife of Dr. Arthur Cecil. Following this successful portrait, he also painted both of their sons, Arthur and Cameron, the present work. Through the Cecils, Henri received other portrait commissions, such as those of Mrs. William Preston Harrison, wife of the noted Los Angeles collector and three portraits of the children of prominent Los Angeles banker Milton Getz.
