Wolf Kahn completed Near Princeton as a commissioned work for a private collection in Princeton, New Jersey. Kahn traveled to Princeton for a few days in October of 1983 and stayed as a guest at the home of his patrons, while he observed and sketched the Princeton landscape, before returning to his studio in New York to paint the present work. Near Princeton was finished and delivered to his patrons the following year. (W. Kahn, unpublished letter, July 2, 1983)
