Footnotes

These earrings, originally with emerald drops, once formed part of the jewel collection of the Earls of Rosse. Anne Parsons, Countess of Rosse (1902-1992) often wore them with the family's magnificent emerald and diamond tiara and necklace, both of which were sold at Christie's in the 1980s. The photograph shows the Countess wearing all three jewels to a court ball held at Buckingham Palace before the marriage of her son, Antony Armstrong-Jones, to HRH The Princess Margaret in 1960 (image credit: Mary Evans Picture Library). These earrings have since been altered and the emeralds replaced with amethysts. For further information also see D. Scarisbrick, 'Ancestral Jewels', 1989, ill. p.155, plates 218 - 220.
