Footnotes

Two noblemen are depicted riding highly decorated prancing horses and escorted by their armed retinue. At the far right of the hemispherical horizon, a city can be seen, while on the left, a family of gazelle ponders the travelers. The bright, turquoise foreground and zigzag riverbank are characteristic of later Bundi and Kotah school paintings. See earlier portraits of Ram Singh II of Kota in the Los Angeles County Museum (El Universo de la India, Santiago, 2012, p.230), Welch, Gods, Kings and Tigers, New York 1997, no.63, and Cimino, Life at Court in Rajasthan, Florence 1985, pl.7, nos.3 & 33.
