Footnotes

This fine drawing is attributed to the renowned artist Manaku. Born around 1700, Manaku was the son of Pandit Seu and elder brother of Nainsukh. For his entire life, he lived and worked in Guler. Manaku almost certainly worked on an illustrated Ramayana by his father, he produced a Gita Govinda in 1730, and in 1735 he began his Bhagavata Purana. Compare other drawn battle scenes by Manaku in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2013-68-2); McInerney & Kossak, Divine Pleasures, New York, 2017, pp.189-193; and Goswamy, Manaku of Guler, Zurich 2017, p.488, pl.B276.
