Footnotes

喀拉拉邦 十七世紀 木質護法神像

This large and expressive pair of wood temple guardians (dvarapalas) have bold headdresses and regalia and voluminous dhotis characteristic of the exuberant dress associated with Kerala's Kathakali dance tradition. Related examples can be found in the 15th-century temple of Kazhakuttam, Kerala, as well as a 16th-century temple at Ettumanur (Kramrisch, Dravida and Kerala in the Art of Travancore, Ascona, 1959, pls.14 & 34-5). Also, see a closely related 17th-/18th-century example in the Victoria & Albert Museum (IS.22-1908) as well as a seated figure of Kali, attributed to the 17th century, formerly in the Kornblum Collection, now in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2011.5). Furthermore, compare a fragment depicting Bhairavi, attributed to the 17th century in Mallebrein, Skulpturen aus Indien, Munchen, 1984, p.180, no.147.
