Footnotes

尼泊爾 約十七世紀 銅鎏金錘揲項鍊

This finely hammered collar depicts a four-armed deity, likely Manjushri Jnanasattva (see HAR 79070), amid well-articulated floral sprays. Nepalese ceremonial necklaces like the present lot could either be worn by a metal image of a deity or by a participant. A silver collar, dated 1676, in the Dallas Museum of Art (1987.470) shares a similar design of a series of foliate medallions flanking a central deity. The treatment of the flame borders is also a good point of comparison. A more elaborate example from the same period, in the Art Institute of Chicago, is published in Pal, Himalayas: An Aesthetic Adventure, Chicago, 2003, p.75, no.43. Also see Bégiun and Toffin, L'Art Newar de la vallee de Kathmandu, Paris, 1990, p.63.

Ex-Collection of Mrs J. Taylor, UK, acquired 1970s
