A Plymouth white figure emblematic of America, circa 1768-70

From a set of the Four Continents, modelled as a classical lady wearing a feather headdress and drapery over a feather girdle, her right hand reaching for a quiver of arrows over her shoulder, her left hand resting on tree stump hung with skins, a prairie dog at her feet, raised on a rocky scroll base, 33.9cm high

Footnotes

The set of the Four Continents, first produced at Vauxhall, is thought to have been brought to Plymouth by the former Vauxhall mould-maker named Hammersley. This figure is inspired by the Roman statue of The Diana of Versailles or Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, now in the Louvre, which is based on a lost Greek bronze. Two coloured versions of this figure are in the Victoria and Albert Museum (accession nos. C.556-1920 and 414:684-1885).
