A very rare Bow triple shell pickle stand, circa 1750

Modelled as three deep scallop shells resting on a pierced rocky base applied with smaller shells, coral and seaweed, a large whelk forming the central handle, the interiors painted in bright blue with a willow tree and rockwork, with a formal border to the rims, 16cm wide

Footnotes

Salts formed from one shell of comparable from and with similar decoration from the collections of Billie Pain and the Susi and Ian Sutherland were sold by Bonhams on 26 November 2003, lot 60 and 3 October 2007, lot 15. However, this appears to be the only early known example of a triple shell pickle stand with this decoration.
