Provenance
Presented to All Saints Church, Leamington Spa 'in Loving Memory of John Edward Humphreys and his sister Martha Walthen Humphreys' of 'Kenilworth House, Leamington, 1923' (according to an inscription on the back of the stretcher and a metal plaque on the front of the frame respectively)
We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for identifying the present painting from a photograph as 'a sure and remarkable pictorial rendering by Giovan Battista Beinaschi'.
Beinaschi trained in Rome with Giacinto Brandi and was thereafter active for a considerable time in Naples, where he established himself among the exponents of the local baroque alternative to that of Luca Giordano and was heavily influenced by the Neapolitan works of Giovanni Lanfranco, thus exerting a significant influence on Francesco Solimena after 1690.
