Saleroom notices

This study is very probably the one listed in Girodet's studio sale (Paris, expert. Pérignon, 11 April 1825) described as 'n°49. Etude d'après un vieillard endormi; cette étude est très terminée jusque dans ses moindres détails [...]', ('n°49, study of an old man sleeping; this study is very finished down to the small details [...]'. It is listed as measuring 17 x 15 pouces (inches) which roughly translates as 46 x 40 cm and was sold for 160 francs to Pérignon (expert and dealer). The high quality of this work and the treatment of the hair and beard (which take much from Jacques-Louis David) are typical of Girodet. Please note that a strip, approximately 8mm. wide, has been added along the top edge of the canvas.
