Provenance
With Agnews, London, where purchased by the present owner in 2002
The attribution to Bertin was confirmed by Thierry Lefrançois, who said 'cette toile semble magnifique', whilst the work was with Agnew's in the 2000s.
Bertin painted several episodes from the life of Moses, including two versions of Moses Striking to Rock, now in Museo d'Arte Antica Castello Sforzesco, Milan and in a private collection, Paris and Moses Defending Jethro's Daughters, now in the Musée de L'Hotel Sandelin, Saint-Omer (see: T. Lafrançois, Nicholas Bertin, 1981, figs. 33, 64 and 65).
