Provenance
Acquired by the present private English collector from a private Spanish collection
Francisco Barrera was one of the artists especially responsible for extending the fashion of seasonal still lifes in Madrid in the mid-17th century. Typically in his compositions both products from the garden and meat are displayed, usually placed on tables or plinths. Such works usually depicted austere kitchen interiors closely following the spatial concept created by Juan de Van der Hamen some years before. A celebrated set depicting The Four Seasons painted by Francisco Barrera in 1638 which attempts a more open and elaborate design is now in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. Each of this series measures approximately 57.2 x 38 cm., with the exception of Spring, which measures 135 x 91.3 cm. In the present series the artist has also produced somewhat lighter, more imaginative compositions in a markedly baroque spirit.
