Mrs Hammond Dorsey was the daughter of the Federalist Senator Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) who was painted by Stuart in 1808 and was Secretary of State in George Washington's administration. It is thought that the painting was commissioned by Elizabeth's brother, Henry Pickering.
