A very rare creamware 'Admiral Lord Howe' Toby jug, circa 1785

Modelled seated on a barrel, a recumbent spaniel at his feet and a long-stemmed pipe resting against the barrel, holding an empty jug in his left hand, a long pole in his right, his eyes and nose picked out in blue, wearing a green coat, ochre waistcoat and blue breeches, the base applied with four pegs each pierced with a hole, 24.9cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
With Alistair Sampson Antiques
James and Timmey Challenger Collection, Chicago

The form of the base is most unusual and no other example with applied pegs appears to be recorded in the literature. Their exact purpose can only be speculated but they were presumably intended to secure the jug in some way, perhaps to a shelf on a ship.
