Footnotes

Provenance
With Delomosne and Son, 16 September 1978

The Society of Sea Serjeants was a Tory club for South Wales with Jacobite leanings which met once a year and existed from 1726 until 1762. The names of 92 Sea Serjeants are known, almost all of whom were members of landed families. An electioneering glass for Sir John Philipps, President of the Society of Sea Serjeants, was sold by Bonhams on 8 December 2004, lot 39.

Saleroom notices

Please note that this glass may only be of possible Jacobite interest. It has not been possible to confirm that the arms are those of the Society of Sea Serjeants. The arms are not listed in any recognised list of granted arms in the United Kingdom, suggesting that they are unofficial. The use of a Welsh dragon as supporter probably links the arms to Wales, so it is possible that the arms are those assumed by a member of the Society.
