An engraved electioneering goblet, dated 1761

Of very pale amethyst tint, the generous ogee bowl inscribed 'Success to Sir Francis Knollys 1761' flanked by tied branches, on a plain stem and conical foot, 17.1cm high

These glasses were engraved to commemorate the Reading election of 1761 which returned two members, John Dodd and Sir Francis Knollys. Sir Francis, the last male heir of an old Oxfordshire and Berkshire family was created a baronet in 1754 and died without issue in 1772. A similar glass is illustrated by L M Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p.302, no.971. Another from the A C Hubbard Collection was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2011, lot 88.
