An engraved 'Sober Club' wine glass of Scottish interest, dated 1758

The drawn trumpet bowl inscribed 'SOBER CLUB 1758' within a cartouche of crossed rose branches and pendant orange and lemon branches, a fine line below the rim, on a plain stem and conical foot, 15.4cm high

The Sober Club was a Glasgow society distinguished by the fact that its members drank only water at their meetings. A similar glass is illustrated by Percy Bate, English Table Glass (1905), pl.LX, no.230. A similar glass was sold by Christie's on 22 April 1975, lot 194 and another on 7 October 1980, lot 126.
