A Grateful Dead Avalon Ballroom concert poster FD-26 OP-2

Second printing of the legendary psychedelic poster by Mouse and Kelley, often referred to as "Skeleton and Roses." The poster advertises two Grateful Dead shows at the Avalon Ballroom on September 16 and 17 with Oxford Circle the supporting act. Printed by The Bindwood Press, San Francisco. Mounted on backing paper with four pieces of tape to the reverse, not visible from the front.
The design of this poster is based on an illustration by E.J. Sullivan from his 1913 book The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. It is believed that psychedelic poster artists Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley often frequented San Francisco Public Library to search books for inspiration for their design. On one such visit the pair discovered this striking image that they considered a perfect fit for a Grateful Dead poster. 20 x 14 in.
