A molded and carved pale yellow-glazed porcelain SNUFF BOTTLE
Huang Chengfu, Daoguang Period (1821-1850)
Of compressed pear shape, finely carved with a landscape scene with a figure viewing a distant waterfall, applied overall with a pale yellow enamel, the foot with the mark Huang Chengfu zuo in relief in seal script, with a corresponding stopper of carved porcelain with a yellow glaze.
3 1/4in (8.2cm) including the stopper

Although Huang Chengfu's name is connected with a few extant porcelain objects, little is known about his life, although it is presumed he was active in Jingdezhen during the Daoguang period as a contemporary of Chen Guozhi (c 1800-1860). See Tony Miller and Humphrey Hui Elegance in Relief, Carved Porcelain from Jingdzhen of the 19th to early 20th centuries, University of Hong Kong, 2006, no 90 p. 223 for the only other known snuff bottle by Huang Chengfu, in the collection of Denis S.K. Low.
