Fossil Bat
Palaeochiropteryx tupaiodon
Middle Eocene
Messel, Germany
The Messel locality in Germany yields the best-preserved early bats in the world. It has been suggested that the early bats of Messel were too primitive to have possessed the echolocation capability of modern bats. However, recent research shows that these 49-million-year-old bats did possess echolocation capacity similar to that of modern birds. The outward appearance of bats has changed little since the Eocene. Offered is a fine Palaeochiropteryx tupaiodon specimen. Measuring 5 1/4 x 4 1/8 x 1/4 in
