Two Armored Fish Shields

Zyxhaspis sienmoradzkii
Devonian
Ukraine

Zyxhaspis sienmoradzkii was one of the primitive armored jawless fish which swam in the 375-million-year-old eurypterid-infested oceans near present day Ukraine. Fish of the Devonian needed protective armor to survive the ferocious attacks of the top predator of their day - the sea scorpions, which could reach lengths of over ten feet. The present plate displays two head shields with eyeholes and some tiny patterns of light armor outlined in white calcite on the brown matrix. Also present is part of a disarticulated fish skull. Matrix measuring 8 x 6in; Shields measuring 4 x 3in and 3 x 2.75in, respectively
