Superb Opalescent Ammonite
Placenticeras meeki
Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation, Alberta, Canada
Presented in the dark shale matrix characteristic of this locality, a beautifully preserved ammonite displays brilliant blue, purple, green, yellow and red coloration. Ancestor to the modern chambered nautilus, ammonites have existed for nearly 330 million years, yet few fossil ammonites approach the beauty of specimens from this locality. Exhibiting the fascinating opalescence of the most desirable specimens from the Bearpaw Formation, the present marvelous specimen shimmers in dramatic contrast to the matrix. The distinctive opalescence is a result of light interference between the shell's preserved layers of nacre. Measuring 20 ½ 18 x 2 ¾in; Specimen measuring 7 x 6in
