Russian Red Ammonite
Craspedodiscus sp.
Jurassic
near Ulyanosk, Volga River Region, Russia
This large, spectacular ammonite is a Craspedodiscus from the Volga River region of Russia. The surface is covered with "firey" iridescence of different colors, predominating in red, a consequence of light passing through the various layers of aragonite and conchiolin deposited by the ammonite in life. The lack of acidity in the depositional environment allowed the specimen to be preserved. This is a large and spectacular example of its type from this region. Weighing approximately 10.4 kilos. Diameter: 38 cm
