Despite being an 'amateur' artist, John Thomson holds a key role in the development of landscape painting in Scotland. Informed by his close friendships with JMW Turner, Raeburn, HW Williams and Walter Scott, his distinctive works were influential on McCulloch and Knox in particular.
This monumental oil encapsulates his feeling for the sublime in Scottish landscape, depicting Morton Castle near Thornhill in Dumfries-shire. A stronghold existed on the site since the 12th Century, and the castle was built in the 15th Century. It was occupied by the Douglases until circa 1715.
