In order to sustain his fledgling career as a writer and with a growing family to support, Walter Scott took on the salaried post of one of the Principal Clerks to the Court of Session in 1806, in addition to his roles as Advocate and Sherrif-Depute for Selkirkshire, a post he held for the rest of his life.
