Of Canadian Interest. A large late 19th century French gorge cased Petite Sonnerie striking and repeating carriage clock with alarm, with travelling case and winding key.

The glazed case with rippled handle over the bevelled glass rectangular inspection panel and repeat button, the signed white rectangular Arabic dial with blued-steel Breguet style moon hands over a subsidiary alarm dial. The twin train movement with large silvered platform escapement with bi-metallic compensated balance, striking the hours, half hours and quarters on a pair of coiled blued-steel gongs mounted on a block stamped F.D. Ticking, striking and repeating. Sold with a brass double ended winding key stamped 23166, and the original leather travelling case with a plaque mounted into the base of the handle which reads 'Hon.D.L McPherson Toronto.' 18cms (7ins) high (3)

Footnotes

The travelling case contains a 19th century handwritten note on the rear of a business card for 'William Tucker, Jeweller, Clare Street, Bristol. William Tucker registered in the 1865 and 1871 Bristol directories as a gold and silversmith, jeweller, watchmaker &c. at 24 Clare Street.

The notes offer directions for use which remain as relevant today as they were 150 years ago.

"The key is kept in small receptacle at back of case. Clock requires winding weekly - Both springs must be wound - the small end of key is only used to set the hands, which is done by the small centre square at back. Do not turn the hands backwards & in putting hours on, pause at the half hour & hour to allow clock to strike. The repeater is automatic & can be used when clock is in or out of case but please press firmly down. To regulate: if slow move index towards F or Vice Versa"

The lid of the case bears the name of Sir David Lewis Macpherson, KCMG PC (1818 – 1896). He was a Canadian businessman and political figure, and served as a member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1896. He was knighted for his service to the country in 1884.
