An Unusual English Hanger
Retailed By Tapp, Cutler, Strand, Mid-18th Century

With bright slightly curved fullered blade (minor areas of rust patination) double-edged towards the point, hilt comprising silver quillon-block cast, pierced and chased with a martial trophy on each side, lobed recurved quillons with rocailles, burnished steel guard of baluster bars joined by C-scrolls and rising to form a knuckle-guard hooked into the silver pommel, the latter cast and chased in the round as a lion's head, and writhen wooden grip covered in blackened fishskin bound with a strand of silver ribbon, in original black leather scabbard with shaped silver locket, chape and suspension mount embossed and chased with Classical trophies, the former engraved with retailers details on the inside, and with two rings for suspension
