In 1920, Eugene Speicher had his first solo show at the then celebrated M. Knoedler & Co. gallery in New York City in which the present work was included. That same year Speicher was awarded the prestigious Beck Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for his portrait of a Russian woman.
