Robert Bradford – a man of substance
The late Hollywood film and television producer, Robert E Bradford, was married for over 55 years to Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE, international bestselling novelist, during which time he produced nine of her books as mini-series and films including the six-hour classic 'A Woman of Substance' which starred Deborah Kerr and was nominated for two Emmy awards.
The career of the late debonair, German-born Bradford almost mirrors the plots of his wife's novels. He left war-torn Europe in 1945 for New York and soon found a job in public relations but then crossed the continent to Hollywood to follow his dream of being a movie producer.
From his first job with Paramount Pictures, he worked his way up to become Vice President of Samuel Bronston Productions in Madrid, with his film credits of this period including the 1961 epic drama 'El Cid' which garnered three Oscar nominations.
During the next decade, the French-educated Bradford served as President and CEO for Franco London films, supervising major production such as John Frenkenheimer's 'Impossible Object' starring Alan Bates and Dominique Sanda, and overseeing production of the French hit 'Mourir d'Aimer' starring Annie Girardot, which won the 1971 Grand Prix du Cinéma Français.
