Samuel Hearne, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company for about fifteen years, records in detail the Indian tribes and the natural history of the regions. Accompanied by his guide, the Chipewyan Matonabbee, "Hearne was the first white man to travel overland to the Arctic Ocean, and he is credited with discovery of the Great Slave Lake and the Mackenzie River system" (Hill).
