Patek Philippe Reference 5013 was first introduced in 1992 as part of their Grand Complications series. The Grand Complication collection is renowned for presenting some of the most sublime horological masterpieces the world has ever seen. The production of Patek Philippe Grand Complications requires hundreds of hours poured into sculpting and perfecting all aspects of the watch to the last detail. In essence, these technical marvels require masterful engineering to construct the movement, and meticulous precision to ensure all elaborate functions are working in perfect synchronicity.
When Reference 5013 debuted in 1992, it was Patek Philippe's most complicated wristwatch. It is the first ever minute repeating, self-winding wristwatch with a perpetual calendar and retrograde date, using Patek Philippe's legendary calibre R27 PS-QR - known for its chime of exceptional quality. The unique platinum tonneau-shaped case was designed and handmade by the famous Master Case-maker Jean-Pierre Hagmann. Hagmann has worked for many of the world's most respected brands, including Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Franck Muller and Audemars Piguet, carefully creating and assembling the cases that hold the delicate inner workings of their luxury timepieces. During the period Reference 5013 was launched, the general public preferred circular cases, and a tonneau-shaped case was considered unconventional, thus it was produced in small amounts due to the limited demand. Today, the tonneau-shaped case is well-accepted and considered tasteful, making this present lot a rare and highly collectible timepiece.
This extremely rare and early example was made in 1993 and the production for Reference 5013 ceased in 2010. It is exceptionally well-preserved, complete with its Patek Philippe box and Certificate of Origin. Undoubtedly, Reference 5013 is the ultimate watch for Patek Philippe connoisseurs.
