The Rolex Submariner was introduced over 60 years ago, and it is a watch steeped in its long history and development. There were many aspects that were kept, and small improvements made over time, making this model a highly sought-after collector's piece. A clean and simple bezel with a well-sculpted masculine case are iconic characteristics of a Submariner. René-Paul Jeanneret, a well-respected member of Rolex's Board of Directors had a passion for diving. It was René-Paul Jeanneret idea to develop a watch that wasn't only an elegant, classic, everyday wristwatch, but also suitable for diving deep in the ocean. By the time it was launched in the market, the Submariner had undergone plenty of rigorous tests. Despite the extreme high salt content in ocean waters and tropical temperatures the watch had shown no signs of corrosion. However, certain models manufactured between the years 1950s to late 1990s had used Tritium a radioactive chemical on the hands and hour markers to cause them to illuminate.

The present lot, Reference 6536/1 is among the rarest and earliest Submariners retaining the key period features. The original glossy black finish dial has transformed into a uniquely desirable grainy texture, due to the radioactive materials that were used on the hands and hour indexes. The Tritium filled hour markers have also developed a warm orange patina over time. Additionally, the chapter ring and gilt prints have aged into a beautiful golden-orange colour that works in harmony with the warm glow of the hour markers. Lastly, the original small white lollipop completes the vintage appeal. Undoubtedly, this Submariner Reference 6536/1 has aged handsomely, and it is truly the ultimate watch for Rolex aficionados.
