An early Victorian carved satinbirch writing table by Gillows

Circa 1840, the tooled leather inset top with a gadroon-and-reel moulded edge, above two short mahogany lined frieze drawers, on foliate and lotus-leaf wrapped baluster end supports terminating in C-scroll carved downswept legs with scaley claw feet and castors, twice stamped: 'GILLOW', 109cm wide x 63cm deep x 75cm high, (42 1/2in wide x 24 1/2in deep x 29 1/2in high)

Footnotes

A pair of goncalo alves card tables of related design to the offered lot, and probably supplied by Gillows in 1843 for John Hargreaves Esq., appear illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Suffolk, p. 263. These comparable tables have very similar scaly reptilian claw feet, C-scroll carved legs, acanthus wrapped baluster columns and gadroon moulded tops to the present satinbirch example.

The 'GILLOW' stamp which is impressed upon the offered writing table is of a type recorded as being used by the Gillows firm between the period 1830-1857.
