Lao Lian Ben's abstractions in ink are rooted in Sumi-e painting, the Japanese ink and brush painting philosophy. Each stroke is a meaningful gesture in dialogue with those that have come before the practice. In Lao's works, tranquillity and composure conveyed in his brush strokes pays tribute to an oriental spirit. From the palest grey to the darkest ebony black contained within each stroke, the artist exerts masterful control based on his own intuition and skills. These two ink works coalesce energies of life and nature, purity and grace, which are retained in the explorations of minimalism that emerged later on in Lao's practice.
