The mount inscription reads (later additions from the artist in brackets):

'(So called -)Dolphin; (properly Coryphene) caught with graines by Captn. French of "Newcastle" Octr 10th 1870/This sketch was made the moment the fish came out of the water,/the colors varied entirely many tints before the fish was dead.'
