Footnotes
Georges Bigot (1860-1927), a French artist, lived in Yokohama from 1882 and 1899. The plates depict female and male Japanese "types" involved in the activities of daily life (cooking, bathing, entertaining), and work (fishermen, wigmakers, soldiers, story-tellers), in both traditional and European-influenced dress.
