Footnotes
A PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION of "the ablest and most interesting record of travel to which the present century has yet given birth" (The Spectator, 14 October, 1914, quoted in Scott Journals. Scott's Last Expedition, 2005, edited by Max Jones, p.xxiv).
Provenance: Gifted by Scott to Mrs Schuster, wife of Arthur Schuster, who was Beyer Chair of Applied Mathematics, and Langworthy Professor of Physics at Manchester University. "Scott consulted Schuster when arranging his scientific plan of both the Discovery and Terra Nova missions" (Hannah Hulme, Mancunian Matters, 2012, online resource).
