An engraving after this sketch was printed in The Illustrated London News, 3 August 1895, p.6. this illustration is accompanied by the following text:
'The little island of Trinidad, in the South Atlantic, has become suddenly of interest to the world, and has caused some friction between the British Government and Brazil. The British title to the island dates back to 1700, when Dr. Halley took possession of it without any resistance from the Portuguese. The Brazil Government claims, however, that in 1782 the island was evacuated by the British and restored to Portugal. Great excitement has been caused in Rio de Janeiro by the news that the direct Argentine cable had been landed on the Island. The illustration which we give of this little-known island is, particularly interesting.'
This text is then followed by a paraphrased account of Trinidada taken from Roper's inscription accompanying lot ** in the this sale.
