香港私人珍藏。上世紀九十年代中購自本港畫廊。
註:一九五一年,林風眠定居上海,受關良影響,開始看戲畫戲。四十年代他畫戲曲人物,著眼點在人物形神以及線條著色寫意形式的把握,這次則「轉移到借鑒西方現代藝術特別是立體主義,尋求一種造型的時空表達了。」
「寶蓮燈」——沈香劈山救母的故事,成為畫家最鍾愛的題材之一。本幅中三聖母仍著黑袍,配寶藍色飾帶居畫面正中,身後沈香與侍女一左一右,連同前景蓮花燈,皆滿敷橙紅色調,四角留白處全補以黑色,色系的冷暖對比,使構圖充滿張力。交織在色塊中粗豪的幾何線條,勾勒出三人舞蹈式的誇張型態。左側沉香和右側侍女托舉雙臂,將聖母環置中間,方中有圓,形成了吳冠中所說的「方、園的飽滿與幾何的秩序」。可以說,戲劇題材的創作,最能體現林風眠致力追求的中西調和,他在構圖、光影、色彩以及空間處理上的大膽嘗試,極大豐富充實了中國繪畫的表現力,更將東方女性如詩如夢的美定格在畫布上。
