A 16th century German relief carved alabaster plaque of the Adoration of the Shepherds

the Virgin to the right gazing at the Christ child lying in a basket surrounded by three winged putti, Joseph standing above Christ holding a candle with one hand shielding it from the wind, the two shepherds to the left of the scene in awe of the scene before them, one clasping his hat to his chest having cast down his bag pipes, the other taking off his cap and kneeling in reverence, the background depicted as classical ruins with the ox and ass extending their heads out of the make-shift stable, the panel set within a dark wooden frame, 36cms x 24cms, the frame 40cms x 28.3cms overall
