A pair of Swedish Blyberg porphyry pedestal urns and covers

in the neo-classical taste, probably first half 19th century
of elegant ovoid form on ring turned waisted moulded socles and integral square plinths, the detachable waisted necks with separate shallow domed covers,

old chipped loss to one neck, 56.5cm high (2)

Footnotes

Alvadalen (Elfdal) in Sweden is the only place in Europe that porphyry has been mined since antiquity. The mines there opened in the 1780's and were subsequently purchased by Charles XIV, who distributed pieces of porphyry throughout Europe as diplomatic gifts.
