Footnotes

The marks on the present lot appear to link a much discussed series of boxes from the late 18th century through to the 1820s, the elusive 'FJ'. Previously erroneously identified as François Juanin and also sometimes attributed to Frères Jordan. 'FJ' appears to have produced a large number of gold and enamelled boxes, the earlier ones bearing the monogram marks found on lots 50 and 51, and the later ones marked with an incuse 'FJ' and, variously, crossed-Ss or the sunbursts found on the present lot, see lots 46 and 47.
