Footnotes

Death is often represented in Northern Renaissance prints, in this engraving, he is peaking out with an hourglass from behind a tree, to remind the viewer that beauty and love are fleeting. Dürer depicts a common theme of the fifteenth century, the Garden of Love, a warning against lust, desire and adultery. A married woman with the young gallant gazing at her, his object of desire, with a sword unambiguously placed between his legs. Surrounded by the beauty and abundance of nature, the young couple are unaware of death lurking behind them, representing the mortality of all.
