Footnotes

The subject of marriage or relations for economic gain between couples of different ages is a common theme in literature and art. This engraving depicts an older man, with his ridiculous fashionable shoes, reaching into his pocket to provide payment to the much younger woman. The woman has a smile of satisfaction on her face as she slips her hand into the purse, ignoring his advances, while the man stares at her intently and gropes her with his right hand.
