吳定一（1939-2007），生於上海，幼時隨家移居香港。1957年，考入普林斯頓大學哲學系，後因興趣而轉修中國藝術與考古史專業。1979年獲普林斯頓大學藝術史博士學位，專攻龔賢，其博士論文是海外研究龔賢較早專著。畢業後先後獲聘在達特茅斯（Dartmouth）、奧博林（Oberlin）等學院任藝術史教授。後定居加州舊金山，主持中國文化中心，定期舉辦文化展覽活動，致力於向西方觀眾介紹中國文化及藝術家。自八十年代起，穿梭往返於舊金山、上海兩地，成為兩地文化藝術交流的重要橋樑。

此輯四幅精心傑構，皆得自吳定一教授家族珍藏，既有六尺巨幅，也有畫家鮮有一作之構圖，吳氏與畫家間之深交厚誼可見一斑。

註：〈懷素寫蕉圖〉作於1981年，乃應吳氏所請而寫。畫家將電影「蒙太奇」的手法運用到構圖中，芭蕉葉大如扇，遮天蔽日，密不透風，與前景潺潺溪流兩相呼應，疏密立現，清涼頓生。青石桌上，硯池盈盈，穎尖濡墨，蕉葉成卷置於石桌一側，與一束野菊為伴，惟不見懷素身影。全幅線條抑揚頓挫，蕉葉之秀美表現得痛快淋漓，層層葉脈間一雙小鳥彷彿竊竊私語，畫面意趣盎然，乃畫家不可多得之佳構。
