Extracts from the diary of Henry Dunlop, Chief Engineer of the Nimrod and from Aeneas Mackintosh's private diary written on the Nimrod Expedition, comprising Dunlop's typescript running from 1 January to 22 February 1908, opening when preparing for their departure and ending: "The night was a perfect one, behind us lay the grand Discovery, bathed in gold drawn from the setting sun. The Western Mountains watched over our departure in silence, just as they will watch our return, -- Aye, under what conditions?" and describing Macintosh's accident on 31 January when he lost his right eye ("Poor old Mack! How sick he must feel..."); a carbon copy headed "Copy of Diary of Journey from Cape Bird to Cape Royds" written on 3 January 1909, ending "Copied from Mackintosh's Private Diary, which was written partly on the march, and partly in the Hut, on his arrival", some sheets with the engraved heading of the 'British Antarctic Expedition 1907', ownership inscription "H.J.L. Dunlop" in pencil on upper covers, c.70 pages in all, dust-staining and spotting, in similar files with metal file-fastenings and card covers, 4to; with an autograph letter signed by Mackintosh to Dunlop ("My dear old 'Steam'"), written from Sydney when preparing to sail with Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition [on which he was to lose his life], on expedition headed paper, 4 pages, 8vo, Sydney, 21 November 1914; and a group of contemporary news cuttings pertaining to the expedition and preparations for Scott's last expedition (small collection)
Footnotes
'IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT WE GOT FARTHER SOUTH THAN ANY OTHER SHIP': Aeneas Mackintosh acted as second officer on Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition. Having being invalided to New Zealand after his accident he returned to the expedition in January 1909 in time to take part in the Cape Royds trip which, as he writes in his diary, was "A business that has been very near ending my life." The location of the original diary is unknown.
Provenance: Henry J.L. Dunlop (1876-1931), Chief Engineer on the Nimrod; by descent to the present owner.
