A rare and unusual A. Redier thermograph, 1877,

complete with clockwork movement with lever escapement powering the revolving recording barrel and two train clockwork movement with cylinder escapement connected to pulleys and weight. The movement raised on cast iron platform and cast iron fluted stand, under mahogany and glass cover, overall height 41 ins (104cm)

Footnotes

Invented by M. Hervé Mangon, the changes of temperature are derived from the difference in coefficient of expansion between an iron and a zinc rod of 1 meter and registered on a paper placed on a rotating cylinder. The accuracy of it's measurement was revolutionary for the time. There were very few thermographs constructed, a similar one is currently exhibited in the 'Arts et Métier' museum in Paris, this is the second one manufactured. Besides the complicated mechanism it's a highly decorative object.
