'Alice Hawthorn', by 'Muley Moloch' out of 'Rebecca', foaled in 1838. Bred and owned by Mr Plummer.
In a career of just four years between 1841-1845 'Alice Hawthorn' won thirty three races and walked over a further eight. She also dead heated on two occasions. Her victories included the Chester Cup of 1842, the Doncaster Cup of 1843 and the Goodwood Cup of 1844. Mr. Plummer had sold her to Mr Salvin at the close of the 1843 season. She was retired to stud where she was to become the dam of the 1860 Derby winner 'Thormanby'. Herring painted several further portraits of Alice Hawthorn between 1843-1845.
